Houghton, Swan Valley
Established in 1836, Houghton is Australia’s third oldest winery and Western Australia’s most awarded, concentrating on the signature styles of Cabernet and aromatic white wines.
The Houghton property was named after one of its first owners, Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton. The Colonel was part of a syndicate of British army officers who saw benefit in purchasing land in the new colony.
In 1859, our first commercial' vintage was produced, a modest 25 gallons. In 1860, Houghton received its first Wine Award, the “Order of Merit” at the Melbourne Exhibition.
The Houghton flagship wine, Jack Mann, is sourced entirely from the acclaimed Justin Vineyard in Frankland River and was first created in 1994. Inspired by the man himself, Jack commenced his wine-making career in 1922, serving a remarkable 51 vintages at Houghton.
Jack Mann was passionate about the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. His quote
“In my opinion, the greatest grape is the noble Cabernet. Cabernet Sauvignon is the only variety that would be tolerated in heaven.”
lead us to create this true West Australian icon, a “Distinguished” wine on the Langton’s Classification and a testimony to Jack’s dedication to this varietal.
Uniquely, Houghton draws fruit from vineyards located across all wine growing regions of WA. We have two wineries: the original Swan Valley property, established in 1836 and since 2001, the south west winery in Nannup. Fruit from the upper and lower regions thereby retains the freshest, most authentic characteristics in wines that truly represent the Western Australian landscape’s magnificent diversity.
