About Us

The Great Wine Estates of Western Australia was established in 1996 as an initiative between Langton's Fine Wine Auctions and David Hohnen, then CEO of Cape Mentelle. It is now well known by Australian wine collectors as a union of Western Australia's top wine marques and is the only association of wineries in the world that is pulled together under the imprimatur of an internationally recognised and respected third party (Langton's).

Inclusion was originally based on a presence and track record on the secondary Australian wine market with membership based on top-performing ultra-cuvee wines.

While there has been a particular focus on the estate Chardonnays and Cabernets of the Margaret River, the Great Southern Region and highly regarded multi-vineyard and cross-regional wines have also been included. The Great Wine Estates therefore reflect a remarkable diversity of wine making philosophy, heritage and individual ideas.
